This summer, Mackinac State Historic Parks is inviting visitors to do more than simply observe history. In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, a lineup of immersive experiences will allow guests to step directly into the story of the American Revolution.

From firing the first cannon of the day to exploring historic sites alongside expert curators, the 2026 season offers hands-on opportunities designed to make history feel immediate, powerful, and personal.

One of the most memorable ways to begin the day is by taking part in a morning cannon firing at either Colonial Michilimackinac or Fort Mackinac. Participants work alongside historic interpreters to prepare to deliver the ceremonial first shot that signals the start of the day. The experience includes site admission and offers a rare chance to take part in a tradition that once marked daily life at the forts.

For those looking to go even further, Colonial Michilimackinac introduces an after-hours program called Guns Across the Straits. As evening settles over the water and the crowds depart, participants remain on site for a private, small-group experience. Guests fire four historic black powder weapons, including a musket, wall gun, mortar, and cannon, creating a striking contrast between the quiet of the Straits and the thunder of 18th-century firepower. The program runs June 6 through October 1 and includes admission for two.

Visitors interested in a deeper historical perspective can join one of the curator-led tours. The Revolution at Mackinac, offered weekly at Colonial Michilimackinac, explores the site’s role during the American Revolution and highlights the experiences of British forces and their Anishnaabek allies. On Mackinac Island, The Military History of Fort Mackinac traces more than a century of change, from its Revolutionary War origins through later conflicts and into its role in early tourism.

Each tour offers a more detailed look at the people, structures, and events that shaped the region, providing context that goes beyond what most visitors experience on a typical visit.
