Northern Michigan University’s Theatre & Dance Department will bring a wave of creativity, talent, and community connection to Mackinac Island with a special two-day residency at Mission Point Theater on May 5–6, 2026.

The residency highlights NMU’s commitment to hands-on learning and artistic excellence, blending performance with meaningful opportunities for community engagement.

A Spotlight on Emerging Talent

The centerpiece of the residency is the Class of 2026 Senior Showcase, taking place Tuesday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Mission Point Theater. The performance will feature graduating seniors presenting a curated evening of scenes, musical numbers, and dance pieces designed to showcase their range and readiness for professional careers.

The event is free and open to the public, offering a rare opportunity to experience rising talent in an intimate setting. A hosted reception will follow in the theater lobby, where attendees can meet and connect with the performers.

Dance for the Next Generation

On Wednesday, May 6, the focus shifts from stage to studio with a series of free community dance workshops for youth ages 6–16. Led by NMU faculty, staff, and students, the workshops are designed to be welcoming for dancers of all experience levels.

The schedule includes:

  • 3:30–4:30 p.m. – Beginner class (ages 6–10), introducing young participants to the fundamentals of dance

  • 4:45–5:45 p.m. – Intermediate/advanced class (ages 10–16), focused on skill-building and choreography

Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing, bring a water bottle, and come ready to move in a supportive, engaging environment.

Northern Michigan University’s Theatre & Dance Department produces a full season of performances each year and emphasizes immersive, student-centered training. This residency offers a glimpse into that work while inviting the Mackinac Island community to take part.
