A group of fifteen Mackinac Island Public School high school students recently had the chance to trade the Island’s winter quiet for the thrill of the ski slopes thanks to a grant made possible through the Mackinac Island Community Foundation and the school’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC).

The YAC, a student-led philanthropy organization at Mackinac Island Public School, helps distribute grant funding to projects that benefit youth on the Island. Last year, the council conducted a Student Needs Assessment Survey for students in grades 7–12. One of the key themes that emerged was a desire for more off-Island experiences, with some students noting that isolation during the winter months can impact mental health and social opportunities. Among the ideas suggested in the survey was the possibility of organizing a ski trip.

Working with the Mackinac Island Community Foundation, YAC helped turn that idea into reality. The foundation approved funding to support a high school ski trip to Nubs Nob Ski Resort, with the trip sponsored by both the foundation and the Youth Advisory Council.

From Feb. 25 to Feb. 27, 15 Mackinac Island students traveled to northern Michigan for the trip. The group stayed at Crooked River Lodge where students enjoyed time together in the game room, pool, and hot tub after full days of activities.

On Feb. 26, the students headed to Nubs Nob for a day on the slopes. Every student received either a ski or snowboard lesson before heading out to explore the resort. For many, it was their first time skiing or snowboarding.

Students began on the beginner “green” runs, but as confidence grew throughout the day many ventured onto the more challenging blue runs and even some black diamond hills.

Organizers said the experience was a huge success, noting how quickly students progressed and supported one another throughout the day.

The group also enjoyed dinners off the slopes, including meals from Buffalo Wild Wings in Petoskey and Bob’s Place in Alanson.
