Mackinac Connect is expanding its community programming this season with the launch of two free language-focused initiatives designed to bring Mackinac Island’s diverse workforce together.

Beginning this week, Mackinac Connect will offer a new weekly Language Exchange program alongside the return of its free ESL (English as a Second Language) classes. Both programs are open to participants of all skill levels and are intended to create welcoming spaces where workers can learn, connect, and build confidence.

The new Language Exchange program will take place every Wednesday in the basement of Ste. Anne’s Church, with sessions offered from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Organizers describe it as a low-pressure environment where Island workers from around the world can practice a new language while meeting people from different cultures.

Participants will be grouped according to their target language and skill level before rotating languages every 15 minutes, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to practice. Conversation partners will also switch midway through each session, giving attendees a chance to meet new people and expand their social circles.

In addition, Mackinac Connect’s free ESL classes return every Tuesday from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the Mackinac Island Public Library. The classes are open to all English learners, and organizers provide all materials. The program is designed to help participants strengthen language skills, improve workplace communication, and create new opportunities both on and off the job.

Both programs are completely free and welcome everyone from beginners to advanced speakers. Organizers hope the events will strengthen connections among the Island’s seasonal workforce while helping participants feel more at home in the community.
