Luke & Amanda after their engagement at the Mackinac Island Public Library
When the weather had other plans, Luke didn’t. A front-door proposal, ten years later, still feels like magic.
On August 2, 2015, what was meant to be a picture-perfect proposal at the Mackinac Island Public Library turned into something even better.
Luke had carefully planned the moment. He knew Amanda’s favorite place on the Island was the library, and he envisioned getting down on one knee on the back deck, overlooking the sparkling water. It was supposed to be calm, scenic, and beautifully timed.
Instead, the skies opened up.

All smiles after a rainy proposal at the Mackinac Island Public Library
It started raining as soon as they stepped off the ferry. And when they finally made their way to the library, there was another surprise waiting for them. The doors were closed.
For some, that might have been enough to postpone the plan. But not for Luke.
Right there at the front door of the library, rain and all, he dropped to one knee and asked Amanda to marry him. No sweeping view behind them. No sunlit deck. Just the two of them, standing in front of her favorite place on the Island.
She said yes.

The rest of the day unfolded in what Amanda describes as a little bubble of bliss. Rain or not, it became one of her absolute favorite memories.
In August 2025, the couple returned to Mackinac Island to celebrate ten years since that rainy proposal. This time, they chose to stay at the Island House Hotel, leaning into the nostalgia and soaking in every familiar view.
Ten years later, the memory still holds its magic. A reminder that sometimes the most meaningful moments are not the perfectly planned ones, but the ones that happen anyway.
On Mackinac, even a rainy day can turn into a love story.
