Cruise ships that previously docked at Arnold Transit Co.’s dock will now anchor offshore until repairs are completed.
Court Ruling Focuses on Safety and Dock Conditions
A court ruling has placed temporary limits on cruise ship docking at a section of Arnold Transit Company’s main dock, following a long-running dispute over needed safety repairs.
Questions about the condition of the dock’s south end first surfaced several years ago, when concerns were raised about its ability to safely support cruise ship mooring and the use of motor vehicles, including emergency vehicles.
Discussions between the City of Mackinac Island and the Mackinac Island Ferry Company continued through 2023 and early 2024. When repairs were not completed, the City brought the matter to Mackinac County Circuit Court, asking for limits on how the affected portion of the dock could be used until safety concerns were addressed.
In May 2024, following an evidentiary hearing, the court prohibited motor vehicle traffic on the south end of the dock. Litigation was later paused to allow time for repair work to move forward.
Ownership of the ferry company changed shortly thereafter, when the Hoffmann Family of Companies acquired Mackinac Island Ferry Company and rebranded the operation as Arnold Transit Company.
Construction activity on the portion of the dock stopped in October 2024. Although additional work was anticipated, repairs did not resume.
In December 2025, the court ruled that the condition of the dock met the legal definition of a nuisance and scheduled further proceedings to determine a repair timeline. When the case returned to court in January 2026, attorneys for Arnold Transit told the judge the company would agree to restrictions preventing cruise ships from docking at the affected section until repairs are completed. The company also indicated it plans to challenge the nuisance ruling on appeal.
The decision is expected to affect only a small number of cruise ship visits. Many cruise ships already anchor offshore and transport passengers to Mackinac Island using smaller tender boats. Ships that previously docked at the Arnold Transit Company dock are expected to follow the same process until repairs are finished.
What This Means for Locals and Visitors
Daily ferry service continues as normal. The court order does not affect regular ferry operations for residents, workers, or visitors traveling to and from the Island.
Most cruise ship arrivals will look the same. Many cruise ships already anchor offshore and transport passengers to the Island by smaller tender boats.
No changes to Island transportation or emergency services. The restriction applies only to a portion of the dock and does not affect carriage transportation, biking, or emergency response on the Island.
Businesses and attractions remain open and accessible. Shops, restaurants, hotels, and attractions continue to operate as usual.
The change is temporary. The docking restrictions will remain in place until repairs are completed and the court order is lifted.
