City Council has approved updates to Mackinac Island’s electric bicycle ordinance, with the biggest changes centered on a new permit and verification process for riders using electric assist cycles as a mobility accommodation.

The amendment expands the definition of allowable devices to include certain three-wheeled Class 2 electric tricycles, aligning more closely with Michigan law.

More significantly, the ordinance introduces a formal permit requirement. Visitors must now apply through the Mackinac Island Police Department and submit materials at least 14 days before arriving on the Island.

Applicants are also required to provide “credible assurance” of a qualifying mobility disability. This can include a state-issued disability placard, official documentation, or a note from a medical provider.

In urgent situations, the ordinance allows for a temporary, short-term approval through an affidavit signed under penalty of perjury. This option is limited in duration and use.

These updates create a clearer and more structured process for electric bicycle use tied to mobility needs on Mackinac Island.
