A REVOLUTIONARY STORY TAKING SHAPE
Winter has a way of slowing things down around the Straits of Mackinac. While the season brings quieter days, it also leaves room to start looking ahead to what is coming next.
As the country prepares to mark its 250th anniversary in 2026, the story of the American Revolution will feel especially close to home in the Straits of Mackinac.

This week, Mackinac State Historic Parks shared plans for a full season of America250 events across Mackinac Island and Mackinaw City, highlighting how the events of 1776 shaped the region and ultimately led to the creation of Fort Mackinac.
The Revolutionary War did not unfold the same way here as it did along the East Coast. In 1776, Michilimackinac remained loyal to the British Crown, even as rebellion spread elsewhere. British leaders soon began rethinking how to defend this strategic location, and within a few years, construction began on Fort Mackinac. That decision still shapes Mackinac Island’s landscape today.
Throughout the 2026 season, daily programs at Colonial Michilimackinac will explore life during that uncertain time in history, from the experiences of British soldiers to the choices faced by French and Native residents navigating shifting alliances. At Fort Mackinac, visitors will learn how and why the fort was built and how its role evolved over time.

Several special events tied to America250 are planned around the Fourth of July, with additional commemorative programs set to take place throughout the summer. The season will also bring updates to familiar sites, including new tours and programs at Fort Mackinac and the reopening of the Mackinac Island State Park Visitor’s Center.
More details will be shared as the 2026 season approaches. Full information about programs, events, and site updates will be available at mackinacparks.com.
