A new tradition is coming to the historic Island House Hotel this season as the property introduces Rose’s Afternoon Tea, beginning May 30.

Rooted in more than 170 years of hospitality, the experience reflects both the hotel’s history and a growing interest in slower, more intentional moments on Mackinac Island. The tea service will be held in the 1852 Grill Room, where guests can enjoy harbor views alongside a classic presentation of tea sandwiches, scones, pastries and desserts. Seating will be limited to maintain an intimate setting.

The experience is inspired by Rose Van Allen Webster, who became proprietor of Island House Hotel in 1892. Under her leadership, the hotel expanded and became known for concerts, dancing and social gatherings. Afternoon tea continues that tradition of connection and conversation.

Guests will select from a curated tea menu before being served a tiered assortment of savory and sweet items prepared by Executive Chef Phil Kromer and his team. Champagne and specialty cocktails will be available as optional additions, and a children’s tea service will also be offered. There is no formal dress code, though some guests may choose to dress for the occasion.

Mackinac Island is known for its busy summer activity, from biking the perimeter to visiting Fort Mackinac and exploring downtown. Afternoon tea offers a chance to pause, sit, take in the harbor and spend time together. The experience is designed for a range of visitors, including couples, families, wedding groups and girls’ weekend trips.

Afternoon tea will be served daily from 3 to 4 p.m. beginning May 30. Reservations are required and open April 1. The cost is $50 per person, with a $25 option for children. Reservations can be made online or by calling the hotel.
